හිටපු යුද හමුදාපති සරත් ෆොන්සේකා වෙනුවෙන් වන ආයාචනයක් එක්සත් ජාතික පක්‍ෂ පාර්ලිමේන්තු මන්තී‍්‍ර වෛද්‍ය ජයලත් ජයවර්ධන දහසය වැනි බෙනඩික්ට් පාප් වහන්සේ වෙත භාර දෙයි.එජාප නායක රනිල් වික‍්‍රමසිංහගේ උපදෙස් මත, ඔක්තෝබර් 26 වැනිදා වතිකානුවේදී එම ආයාචනය භාරදීම සිදුවිය. ෆොන්සේකා මහතා ත‍්‍රස්තවාදයෙන් රට මුදාගැනීමට පෙරමුණ ගෙන කි‍්‍රයා කිරීමේ සිට සිරගත වීම දක්වා වූ සිදුවීම් ජයවර්ධන මහතා විසින් පාප් වහන්සේට පැහැදිළි කළේය.ඒ සම්බන්ධයෙන් වැඩිදුරටත් විස්තර කොළඹ සිටින වතිකානු තානාපති ජෝර්ජ් ස්පිටේරි අගරදගුරු හිමිපාණන්ගෙන් හා කාඩිනල් මැල්කම් රංජිත් හිමිපාණන්ගෙන් ලබාගන්නා ලෙසට ඔහු පාප් වහන්සේගෙන් ඉල්ලා තිබේ.
JSS President Dr.Jayalath Jayawardena appeal for SF given to Pope
On the instructions of the Leader of the Opposition and Leader of the United National Party Mr. Ranil Wickremesinghe, Dr. Jayalath Jayawardena, MP and Deputy General Secretary of the UNP has handed over an appeal on behalf of the United National Party regarding General Sarath Fonseka (SF) to His Holiness Pope Benedict the XVIth at the Vatican, when he had a special audience with His Holiness the Pope on October 26, 2011.
Dr. Jayawardena has informed the Pope that General Sarath Fonseka was responsible for eradicating terrorism from Sri Lanka as the Commander-in-Chief of the Sri Lanka Army.
He has mentioned that the Sri Lankans suffered through the years because of terrorism.
He has also mentioned that General Sarath Fonseka having retired after active service had contested as the Opposition Presidential Candidate at the last Presidential Election where the UNP had extended its support to him.
Dr. Jayawardena had also told the Pontiff that General Sarath Fonseka has won a parliamentary seat from the Colombo district with a large majority during the last General Election which was held immediately after the Presidential Election.
Dr. Jayawardena had highlighted the fact that presently General Sarath Fonseka was imprisoned following a judgment issued by the Court Martial of Sri Lanka. He has requested the Pope to get more information regarding General Sarath Fonseka from His Excellency Archbishop Joseph Spiteri, Apostolic Nuncio in Sri Lanka and from His Eminence the Most Rev. Dr. Cardinal Malcolm Ranjith, Archbishop of Colombo.
