jayalath_front1UNP MP Dr. Jayalath Jayawardena and three others have been hospitalized following the police crackdown on an opposition protest in Colombo this afternoon (Feb. 17), the party’s officials said.
Dr. Jayawardena was hit on the head by a teargas canister thrown by police at the protestors, led by the UNP, who had been agitating against mainly the recent fuel price increase. The injured were admitted to Colombo National Hospital, said Mr. Samaraweera. Although the police fired teargas and water and dispersed the protestors, some of them regrouped and continued their agitation in front of the Fort railway station. As a result of the demonstration, Olcott Mawatha has been completely blocked, police spokesman SP Ajith Rohana said, and asked motorists to use alternative routes.
