The UNP-led Opposition yesterday staged a massive sit-in protest on the road outside the Fort Railway Station against the recent Weliweriya killingsand religious violence followed by a march up to the Presidential Secretariat roundabout, where they were halted by the riot police.Members of several parties including the Tamil National Alliance, Nava Sama Samaja Party, Democratic Peoples Front and United Socialist Alliance joined the demonstration and procession which went on from 2.00 pm to around 6.30 p.m.A tense situation prevailed throughout.
When the procession got close to the Presidential Secretariat they were greeted by armed policemen and several buses that were placed across the road. Many of them including parliamentarians Ravi Karunanayake,Eran Wickremeratne,Harin Fernando and Harsha de Silva climbed on to the roofs of the buses and continued to protest, demanding justice and implementation of the rule of law. Rosy Senanayake was also seen in the thick of things with her two children. She said that her children were present to show solidarity with the three young persons who were killed at Weliweriya and all the children and women who have either been killed or raped by ruling party politicians.
Opposition party leaders M. A. Sumanthiran, Wickremabahu Karunaratne, Mano Ganeshan,Sritunga Jayasuriya and senior UNP’ers including John Ameratunga, Joseph Michael Perera, Karu Jayasuriya and Sajith Premadasa were also prominent in the forefront of condemning the violence and crime that continued unabated.
Leader of the UNP Ranil Wickremesinghe addressing the public said that the country was being run by a murderous regime which didn’t even hesitate to kill unarmed innocent civilians to perpetuate its hold on power.
Demanding an independent inquiry into the Weliweriya killings due to army fire, he pointed out that it was important to ascertain who had brought the military in to deal with what was purely a matter for the police and given them orders to shoot.
Drawing a parallel, Wickremesinghe observed that Buddhist Monks who joined the Weliweriya villagers in asking for clean water had been fired at and tear gassed, while last Saturday a Mosque in Grandpass was attacked while Muslims were still engaged in their religious obligations on the occasion of Ramazan festival.
Wickremesinghe while noting that the Weliweriya and Grandpass incidents were not the first since the Rajapaksa’s came to power,warned that the Opposition would continue to demonstrate on the streets if the killings and attacks on places of religious worship did not stop.
Eran Wickremeratne said that in the case of Roshen Chanaka killed while demonstrating for his labour rights in the Free Trade Zone, no one had been punished even though several years had lapsed. The only thing that happened was that the then IGP resigned and was subsequently given a diplomatic posting.
What happened in Rathupaswala Weliweriya indicated that even today some could live in clover while others are denied basic economic and social rights like clean water. Villages had for months been asking for clean drinking water. When their cries went unheard by both the factory that was alleged to be responsible for emitting harmful substances into the ground and the government they had resorted to protest only to be attacked with live and rubber bullets, tear gas, batons and water cannon, he observed.
Wickremeratne said that only an independent inquiry would be able to establish whether the contamination of water was directly related to the factory in the area. Whatever the outcome, it was evident that the company had failed to engage the community in which they operated, he added.
The Opposition demonstration ended with members of the UNP Youth Wing submitting a petition signed by the joint opposition to President Mahinda Rajapaksa, which was accepted by a member of the presidential staff.
They have called for immediate action to protect minorities including their places of religious worship and commercial interest, an independent probe into the Weliweriya Killings to identify and punish the culprits and an end to what they call state sponsored terrorism against innocent civilians.

ඔබ වෙත මේ ලිඛිත දැන්වීම කෙරෙන්නේ, ඔබ සියලූ හමුදාවන්ගේ ප්‍රධාන අණ දෙන නිලධාරි ලෙසත් ආරක්ෂක කටයුතු බාර ඇමතිවරයා ලෙසත්, මෙහි සඳහන් සහ සඳහන් නොවන සියලූ අපරාධ සහ නීති විරෝධී කාර්යන් වෙනුවෙන් වගකිව යුතු යැයි අප විශ්වාස කරන හෙයිනි.
2011 වසරේ මැයි මස 30 වන දින, කටුනායක නිදහස් වෙළඳ කලාපයේ කම්කරු විරෝධතාවයට ඉතා අමානුෂික ලෙස පොලීසිය විසින් පහර දී වෙඩි තැබීමෙන් රොෂේන් චානක මිය ගියේ ය. එළෙසින්ම, 2012 පෙබරවාරි 15 වන දින, ඉන්ධන මිල වැඩි කිරීමට එරෙහිව පාරට පැමිණි ධීවර ජනතාවට පොලීසිය වෙඩි තැබීමෙන් ඇන්තනි වර්ණකුලසූරිය මිය ගියේ ය.
පාරම්පරික වඩු කාර්මිකයින් 4,000 ක් ඔවුන්ගේ ජීවනෝපායට විසඳුම් ඉල්ලා උද්ඝෝෂණය කළ ද ඔබගේ ආණ්ඩුවට විසඳුම් නැත. දැරණියගල නූරි ප්‍රදේශවාසීන්ට ජීවිත ආරක්ෂාව හා සාමය ලබා දීමට ඔබගේ ආණ්ඩුවට නොහැකි වී ඇත්තේ ආණඩු පක්ෂයේ ප්‍රාදේශීය සභා සභාපති මැරයෙකුට නිදහසේ මැරකම් කරන්නට ඉඩ දී ඇති බැවින් ය. රාජාංගන ජනපදයේ ගොවීන් දහසකට වැඩි පිරිසකට ඔවුන්ගේ වැව් තාවුල්ල ආරක්ෂා කිරීමට උද්ඝෝෂණය කරන්නට සිදුව ඇත්තේ පළාත් සභා මහ ඇමතිගේ දේශපාලන හෙන්චයියන් අනවසර වගාවන් කිරීමට පටන් ගෙන ඇති බැවින් ය.
ඔබගේ ආණ්ඩුවට සාමාන්‍ය එදිනෙදා ප්‍රශ්න විසඳන්නට වත් හැකියාවක් නැති බව ඒ හැමකින් ඔප්පු කරන්නේ ය. ඒ වෙනුවට ඔබ විසඳුම් ඉල්ලන ජනතාව මත මෘග සන්නද්ධ ප්‍රචණ්ඩත්වයක් මුදා හරින්නේ ය.
රතුපස්වල, නැදුන්ගමුව, වැලිවේරිය අවට ජනතාව වතුර ඉල්ලා අගෝස්තු 01 වන දින පාරට පැමිණියේ ඔවුන් එතෙක් ඉදිරිපත් කළ පැමිණිලි කිසිවකට සාධාරණ උත්තරයක් නොලැබුණු විට ය. ඔවුන්ට ඔබගේ ආණ්ඩුවේ පිළිතුර වූයේ මෘග හමුදා ප්‍රහාරයකි.
කුඩා දරුවන් මහල්ලන්, ස්ත්‍රීන් පුරුෂයින් වෙනසක් නොවුනු හමුදා ප්‍රචණ්ඩත්වයෙන් දැනට නිල වශයෙන් තරුණන් තිදෙනකු මිය ගොස් ඇත.
එබැවින් 'සමගි බලවේගය' නැමැති අපි, ජනතා ව්‍යාපාරයක් ලෙස ඔබගේ ආණ්ඩුවෙන් මෙම ප්‍රශ්න සඳහා පිළිතුරු ඉල්ලා සිටිමු.
1. නිරායුධ ගම්වැසියන්ට වෙඩි තබන්නට හමුදාවට අණ දුන්නේ කවුරුන් ද ?
2. සජීවි උන්ඩ යොදා ගනිමින් උද්ඝෝෂකයින් ඉවත් කිරීමට හමුදාව යොදා ගත්තේ මන් ද ?
3. වැලිවේරිය ප්‍රහාරය සම්බන්ධයෙන් ස්වාධීන පරීක්ෂණයක් ආරම්භ නොකරන්නේ මන් ද ?
4. තම ස්වභාවික ජල සම්පත දූෂණය වී ඇතැයි පැමිණිලි කරන ජනතාවට ඔබගේ ආණ්ඩුව ලබා දෙන ස්ථීර විසඳුම කුමක් ද ?
ඡන්දයෙන් තේරී පත් ශ්‍රී ලංකාවේ ජනාධිපති ලෙස සහ ආරක්ෂක කටයුතු පිලිබඳ ඇමති ලෙස, අපගේ ආණ්ඩුක්‍රම ව්‍යවස්ථාවට අනුව ඔබ මේ සියල්ලට වගකිව යුතු යැයි අප පිළිගන්නා අතර, රටේ ජනතාවට ඒ වෙනුවෙන් ඔබ පිළිතුරු දීමට බැඳි ඇතැයි අපි කියමු.
